How can external interference affect my Swellpro drone?

You may or may not have heard about external interference & how this can effect the drone while in flight.

Your drone communicates between the drone and controller using radio waves, and often these are in the 2.4 gHz range. Most Drone (irrespective of the brand) operate on these same frequencies. Under normal conditions these two communicate together quite happily after the controller is paired with the drone, and this allows you to control your drone using the remote controller.

However there are a number of other things around when you are flying your drone, including the beach that can have an negative effect on you flying your drone or having full control of that drone while it is in the air. We have broken it down into three categories below:

Radio Interference

  • Strong WIFI from Nearby Hotels Operate on this frequency
  • Radio Towers nearby
  • Heavy machinery like Road Working Equipment
  • Even Microwave ovens in nearby Motorhomes
  • Military Equipment and Aircraft

Solar & Environmental Effects

This is another thing that can affect your drone, but this one comes from the sun itself. As you may know, the sun shoots solar emissions towards the earth on a regular basis, and sometimes these emissions become “solar storms” and once these storms hit the earth they will disrupt electric equipment around the world. This will often ditstrpubt not only the earths magnetic field but can also interfere with radio signals themselves.

You can download free APP’s which will give you an indication of the strength of any solar storm on each given day. Rule of thumb – look for the KP Index, and if this KP Index is “5” or above, then there is a solar storm and it is unwise to fly your drone on that day.

Magnetic Interference

This External Interference Source is related to things that can disrupt the the earths magnetic field. Why this is no important for anyone flying a drone or fishing drone, is that all drones have an important sensor inside known as a Magnetometer (also called a digital compass). This compass sensor is very important for the drone and if this sensor is showing an inaccurate reading it can cause havoc for the drone particularly if it is “auto fish” model or “Return to Home” Mode.

There are a number of things that can effect the compass, including Large Metal objects like Cars, or iron roofs close-by, flying near HT Powerlines, or even Solar Storms as discussed above can also cause issues with the compass inside the drone.

Summary

It’s also important to remember that the above kinds of External interference can effect all drones currently on the market including DJI, none are immune to the effects of this on a drone. One of the most important things you can do as a drone owner is to make sure that your sensors are calibrated before each flight no matter what drone you have. this includes the compass sensor, and also the IMU or Gyro sensor. This way, at least from the start of your drone flight the sensors are readying 100% accurate. While this won’t save you from the effects of Solar Storms, or Radio interference it might be the difference between losing your drone or gettng it home in one piece if your drone is ever effected b external interferece as described below.
